Petrochemical & refining
Demister pads, separator internals and filter screens for the refineries and petrochemical plants around Mumbai and the Tarapur belt.
Vapour–liquid separation is the core duty here. A knitted mesh demister pad is a simple object with an unforgiving specification: get the density, wire diameter or thickness wrong and the pad either floods and carries liquid over, or blinds and chokes the vessel.
Sizing follows the Souders–Brown relation, which sets maximum gas velocity from the liquid and gas densities. The K factor that goes into it is not universal — vertical pads in horizontal flow lose roughly a quarter of their capacity, vacuum service considerably more, and fouling duty more again. Our selector applies these as published multipliers rather than quoting a single number.
Material selection is where cost is genuinely won or lost. Amine and glycol streams carry chlorides and need 316L. Seawater service usually needs Monel. Specifying 304 to save money on a chloride stream buys a pad that fails in service and a shutdown to replace it.
What this sector typically orders
- Demister padsKnitted mesh, 100–300 mm, segmented for manhole access
- Separator internalsPerforated plates, distributors, baffles
- Filter and strainer screensPerforated and mesh elements to drawing
- Perforated cylindersRolled and welded filter elements
- Support gridsExpanded metal and heavy perforated plate
Common questions
- How do I size a demister pad?
- V_max = K × √((ρ_liquid − ρ_gas) / ρ_gas), with K around 0.107 m/s for a horizontal pad in vertical flow. Operate below that and the pad separates. Our demister selector runs the calculation and flags flooding, or send us the process data sheet and we will size it.
- Why does the pad need to be in segments?
- Because it has to pass through the manhole. A 1800 mm pad through a 500 mm manhole needs four overlapping segments. Tell us the manhole diameter with the enquiry and the segmentation is designed in rather than improvised on site.
- Do you supply material test certificates?
- Yes, for alloy work where specification requires it — 316L, Monel and titanium. We have held an import-export code since well before it was common and handle export documentation in-house.
